Areas of research

My main research interest is in the broad area of decentralized co-ordination and, in particular, decentral concepts, architecture, and methods for business information systems. It further includes technologies for enterprise interoperability, model-driven business process engineering and automation, as well as agent technology, peer-to-peer and grid computing.

About me / CV

I am a Full Professor of Computer Science at Clausthal University of Technology, where I hold the Chair for Business Information Technology (Wirtschaftsinformatik).

From 1999 to 2006, I headed the Agent and Peer-to-peer research group at Siemens Corporate Technology (CT), in Munich, Germany; prior to working for Siemens, from 1996 to 1998, I was a founding member and Principal Software Engineer at the London-based start-up company Zuno Ltd., a 100% subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric, spun off from the Mitsubishi Electric Digital Library Group. At Zuno, I developed agent-based infrastructure for distributed digital library, including technologies for adaptive information retrieval and workflow management. When Zuno was acquired by the STM publisher John Wiley & Sons in 1998, I was developing the electronic commerce technology within Wiley’s internet production and publishing system Wiley Interscience. Prior to my industry career, I was a research assistant in the multiagent systems laboratory at the German Artificial Intelligence Research Center (DFKI) in Saarbrücken, where I did research on software architectures for intelligent agents and multiagent systems. I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Universität des Saarlandes, and an M.Sc. (Diplom-Informatiker) from University of Kaiserslautern.

I have been active in the field of intelligent agent and multiagent technologies, electronic business, and software technologies for almost 15 years. I published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers on various facets of agent technology, including one monograph, edited books, and numerous journal and conference publications. He has been a speaker at various international conferences, workshops, and summer schools. Among many other scientific activities, I am General Co-Chair of the International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS’08) and Program Co-Chair of the International Conference on Interoperability of Enterprise Systems and Applications (I-ESA’2006 and I-ESA’2007). He is a member of the Board of the International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (IFAAMAS). I have been involved in organizing numerous international workshops, including the International Workshops on Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages (ATAL), Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE), Smart Grid Technologies (SGT), and Agent-based Technologies and applications for enterprise interoperability (ATOP).
