About me

Dr. Jelena Fiosina (English: Fioshina, born Afanasyeva) is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Informatics at TU Clausthal. She joined TU Clausthal in 2011, after 3 years at TU Riga, Latvia. Prior to that, she had completed her PhD from the Transport and Telecommunication Institute (Riga, Latvia).

Dr. Fiosina’s areas of expertise include methods of data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and their applications to transportation, mobility and bioinformatics. She has authored or co-authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications in conference proceedings and journals among them: Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, Journal of Quality Technology and Quantitative Management, Communications in Dependability and Quality Management, International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Applied Computational Intelligence and Soft Computing, Journal of Mathematical Science on topics like deep learning, explainable AI, computational statistics, distributed machine learning, big data analysis, and multi-agent decision making.

She conducted post-doctoral research in a number of funded scientific projects in Germany and Latvia.

Currently, Dr. Fiosina investigates explainability and transparency of AI methods. In particular, she investigates explainable AI methods for human-centric ride sharing services in EC-Rider project of Volkswagen Foundation.

Dr. Fiosina has considerable teaching experience, which has enabled her to develop significant mentoring and leadership skills. She taught courses on machine learning, decision making, data analysis and simulation in transportation, and intelligent transport systems. She has further supervised several B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses, also in cooperation with industry (e.g. data driven inventory control at BMW).

She also has an experience in the conference organization, working as a member of the Local Committee of two international conferences. 

She has worked as an EU expert in machine learning and data analysis in several EU Commission programmes.

Dr. Fiosina has four years of practical experience as well, accrued as a principal software developer in the Transport and Telecommunication Institute, where she led the development of a shared resources planning system.
