M.Sc. Business Information Systems

Beginning in 2007/2008, Clausthal University of Technology will offer an innovative Master Programme in Business Information Systems. The students obtain a degree that is comparable to the former Diploma as well as acquiring the ability to perform scientific work, allowing them to pursue a further Ph.D. career. The Programme lasting four semesters teaches theoretical, methodical and product-related competences in Computer Science, Business Studies and the core of Business Information Systems.

Students have the option to take on the speciality subject of Energy Management as an application area. This is a unique feature of the Master Programme Business Information Systems at Clausthal University of Technology. It focuses on IT-based scheduling, configuration, administration and optimisation of processes and systems for energy production and distribution, addressing economic and technical aspects alike. Benefiting from both the professional and geographical proximity of the Energieforschungszentrum Niedersachsen (Research Centre for Energy of Lower Saxony) which is currently being established nearby in the town of Goslar, this Master Programme can lead on to an attractive future with bright job prospects.

The Programme addresses graduates from Bachelor Programmes in Business Information Systems, Business Information Technology, or similar fields. It is the natural continuation of the Bachelor Programme Computer Science/Business Information Systems (with specialization in Business Information Systems) at Clausthal University of Technology.

Apart from gaining methodical and professional knowledge, acquiring social competences (so called soft skills) plays an important role while studying the Master Programme. Projects, Seminars and Master Theses are closely linked with current ongoing international research. This, in addition to professional and scientific qualification through active participation in latest research on Business Information Systems, allows students to gain valuable experiences in communication, presentation, teamwork, and foreign languages.

The core of the curriculum in Business Information Systems consists of courses in:

  • Electronic Commerce / Electronic Business
  • Project and Quality Management in Software Systems Engineering
  • Technological Foundations of Cooperation Systems
  • Decentralised Information Systems
  • Computer-Supported Collaborative Work
  • Data and Web Mining
  • Multi-agent Systems
  • Web Information Systems

The specialisation in Energy Management covers the following subject areas:

  • Engineering and Scientific Foundations of Energy Management
  • Economic Aspects of Energy Management
  • Technical Aspects of Energy Management
